| Lope Hotel | |
| We thought it would take us no more than two hours to arrive at Lope but six hours later than expected, we finally arrived. With such a horrible road, we were glad to treat ourselves to a bit of luxury. | |
| | | | | Because we were so close to water, I kept hearing animals creeping around our tent. At one point, I woke up to look around but I found this morning sky instead of seeing any lions. | | |
| | | | | Even though the river was low, you could still see all the hydraulic lifts. I can just imagine the torrent this must be while in flood, great for rafting. | | |
| | | | | In Lope, we had the choice of camping in a rather poor looking campment or splurge for a $180 room. We split the room between us and lived large for two days. | | |
| | | | | They say on a hot day you can see the crocodiles sunning along the banks of the river. We were not so lucky. | | |
| | | | | This was the hotel pool overlooking the river, too bad it is empty. This being our third empty pool, we now have a running joke that every pool in West Africa is empty. | | |
| | | | | While everyone else took advantage of the afternoon electricity and air-condition, I watched the locals go fishing. About 1 out of 5 casts landed a very small fish. | | |
| | | | | Then we arrived about two hours early for dinner and just waited until someone opened up the restaurant. Luckily, the bar was open. | | |
| Tomorrow will be our first proper safari of West Africa. I do not know if it was the excitement or that I was in an unfamiliarly soft bed, but I was wide-awake most of the night. | |
